Knowing

wild horses paw the surface

freshwater rises

floats on top

salt water sinks, gravity’s favor

lapped first by the stallion

then the harem

 

scatters and converges

passing cedars and live oaks

the male stops,

females curve around him, snorting

 

my heart savors these salt tears

mystery to me

they surface at daybreak

recede with the arc of the sun n
