NATIONAL CLEAN BOATING EVENT TO BE HELD IN SAN FRANCISCO June 9
Celebration Coincides with National Fishing and Boating Week.
The Marine Environmental Education Foundation (MEEF), a group committed to clean boating practices through National Clean Boating Campaign (NCBC), will hold its fourth-annual NCBC event Saturday, June 9, 2001, from 10 am to 4 pm, at San Francisco‘s Hyde Street Pier near Fisherman’s Wharf. The free celebration features activities, demonstrations, tours and exhibits that celebrate clean boating practices. Free admission to the Hyde Street Pier in included.

Concurrent with this event, the Port of San Francisco will coordinate the Grand Opening of its new 185 berth Hyde Street Commercial Fishing Harbor in conjunction with the Clean Boating Celebration. A highlighting of these new facilities will be state of the art environmental facilities.

San Francisco Fisherman’s Wharf area —world-renowned for its deep-rooted maritime history — is the perfect backdrop for a celebration of clean boating practices. "This location is the most public venue yet for our celebration event. We are very excited over our opportunity to work with the National Park Service, the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park, the Maritime Park Association, the Port of San Francisco, the California Coastal Commission, and the local Fisherman’s Wharf Merchant’s Association to make this the most diverse and exciting clean boating celebration yet," says Pat Buller Pearson, MEEF event coordinator.

MEEF, a consortium of marine industry associations, marine businesses, agencies and environmental groups, is the creator and organizer of the NCBC.

More than 78 million Americans enjoy recreational boating, spending more than $19 billion each year.. Heightened environmental concerns have prompted boaters to promote simple, commonsense techniques to avoid polluting waterways; good fueling and bilge care practices; sewage control and pumpout use; and environmentally friendly boat maintenance."
