World War II Ship To Sacramento

Step back into history with a cruise on the river aboard the WWII Liberty Ship Jeremiah O’Brien from San Francisco on August 29 or return from Sacramento to SF on Tuesday, September 2. If you cannot take a day to ride the ship, just come to the Port of Sacramento on Saturday, Sunday, or Monday, August 30-31 and September 1, to visit the ship from

9 am until 4 pm ($7 adults, $5 seniors and under age 14, under 6 free, military free). This is an opportunity to visit the State Capital, State Fair, Railroad Museum, Sacramento Old Town, and the Military Museum. (Round-trip fare is $300; one-way is $175 with free parking and free chartered bus return.)

Go into the engine room and see the steam reciprocating engine used in the movie TITANIC. See the 3 inch, 5 inch, and 40mm guns that the US Navy armed guard and merchant seamen used to defend the ship against enemy aircraft. Wander freely through the midship’s house and navigation bridge. See the galley and coal stove used to cook for a crew of 72 or more. It is exciting to go down the stairs into #2 hold ’tween deck to visit the ship’s store and see the beginning of our museum.

Get a sense of history as preserved by 300 volunteers for this nonprofit historic educational living museum as she was originally built. She is the last active ship in the world that took part in the greatest sea assault in history -- the invasion of Northern France that began on D-Day, June 6, 1944; she made eleven English Channel crossings along with more than 5,000 ships; she is the only ship to return for the 50th anniversary celebration. Among her honors, the O’Brien was inducted into the Hall of Fame at Kings Point and she received the prestigious Maritime Heritage Award from the World Ship Trust. Proceeds from the cruise, along with all donations, help fund preservation efforts.

Passengers board from 7:30 am, depart at 9 am and arrive about 6 pm. Continental breakfast will be served in the morning, BBQ dinner at noon, 4 pm buffet snacks. Refreshments available and a jazz band will entertain. For passenger bookings or more information, call 415-544-0100 or e-mail liberty@ssjeremiahobrien.org
